Up for sale is a pleuroceras ammonite dating back to the Jurassic time period about 185 million years ago.    The ammonite piece contains multiple ammonites.  The main ammonites measure 1 inch and  1 1/4 inches.   What makes these fossils so interesting and unique is that the ammonite was pyritized, or in other words, this ammonite was mineralized with iron pyrite or “fool’s gold” during the fossilization process, resulting in the golden coloration.   This is a beautiful piece any fossil collector would love!
Ammonites were soft-bodied marine molluscs that lived in spiral, compressed, multi-chambered shells.   The outermost chamber of the shell housed the animal itself.  Ammonites are excellent index fossils, which means that the presence of a particular ammonite species in a geologic strata helps to identify the age of the fossils found in that layer.   This is because certain species of ammonites only lived during specific time periods.
We have a variety of ammonites available so be sure to check out our other listings!
