    Description

1 pound lots of black, hematite replacement, ammonite fossils and fossil pieces (this means that the mineral hematite or iron, replaced the body of the ammonite animal over millions of years) with some fossils being complete and some just pieces.Ammonite fossils ,genus Prolyelliceras, from northern Africa, sized approximately from 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch wide by 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, with each 1 pound lot scooped from the fossils as pictured and the picture was taken dry without flash.Easily identified and great educational hands on learning tools for replacement fossils. Each winner will receive 1 pound approximately 160 plus ammonite fossils and fossil pieces scooped from ammonite fossils as  pictured.Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals and as molluscs are more closely related to living squid, cuttlefish and calamari than they are to shelled nautiloids of today. The earliest ammonites appear during the Devonian, and the last species died out during the Cretaceous extinction event. The name "ammonite", from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled ram horns ("Horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon was typically depicted wearing ram's horns. These particular ammonites are from North Africa near the Sahara desert and are nice specimens for hands on educational use as well as collections.
