ANTIQUE CHINESE REVERSE GLASS PAINTING HARDWOOD FRAME WAX SEAL TWO PRAYING NOBLE WOMEN
(PROBABLY 1910-1950)
Up for auction is an antique Chinese reverse painting on glass.  The painting is dated probably
from
1910-1950. This painting was done by a highly skilled artist of that period, resulting in the superb quality of the faces, details of the hair pieces, and the realistic folds on the robes of the Qing Dynasty.  The background and the foreground include minute details on the carved wood screen doors, the wooden column and the realistic bamboo stalks.  They look three-dimensional.
Only high quality glass paintings such as this one are framed in hardwood.  The hardwood feels very smooth.  The painting is proudly stamped with a wax seal.
This is an export approval seal that the Chinese government put on an antique item before it was exported from China.  The wax seal is called "jianding".
The glass painting depicts
thick smoke flying toward the heavens from three burning incense sticks.  There is another cloud of smoke in front of the two young beautiful Qing Dynasty noble women, coming from the incense they lit for their prayers.  The women look down the balcony, awaiting, or searching a sign that their prayers have come true.
Condition Report
The image on the glass and the wooden frame are in excellent condition considering this is a pre-owned item.
Please see the photos for the described conditions.  The wooden frame shows sign of wear such as scratches, dust, and slightly wood shrinkage at the corners.  The upper left corner is missing a piece of wood.
