    Description

The founder of MacEffects is selling off dozens of prototypes and other rare machines to fund the development of new Apple accessories.  For an example of such accessories already produced, please view our other listings.  As such, this listing comes from his private collection and is offered for your consideration.
This listing is for a rare Apple Power Macintosh 6100 DVT Prototype (#315) code named "Piltdown Man."  This system was purchased in Cupertino California from another collector by way of a consigner.  This unit is different in several ways when compared to the production unit.  Below lists some of the differences and prototype related details:
CD-ROM drive Sony Sample (For Evaluation Only) CR-503-CAJ-1 (October 1993) - Complete Part Number Does Not Exist Elsewhere - Bezel Missing (originally Caddy Loaded)
Floppy Drive Sample MF355F-592MA Serial Number: 000033 (April 1993) Manual Inject - Front Bezel Cutout from Auto Inject
Hard Drive is an Apple Branded 160mb Drive (never shipped with this size)
Case Appears to have been from a Quadra 610 and adapted for the prototype 6100 parts a sticker is affixed to the top case (unreadable)
Historical Significance: This machine represents a huge shift at Apple, it was the first shift away from the 68000 series and on to Motorola's PowerPC series.  Apple stayed with PowerPC until 2006 when they shifted to Intel.  The 6100 was the first consumer PowerPC machine in Apple's lineup (6100/7100/8100) making PowerPC affordable for the masses.  This machine also represents Apple's efforts to bring multimedia to everyone with its tray loaded CD-ROM and Manual Inject Floppy.
This machine was tested and appears to be working fine, however, it appears that it will need new logic board capacitors (common) if the buyer intends to use the machine.  Left all 100% original for the buyer to decide.  A new PRAM battery was added (otherwise it won't display video).  This machine also requires a special video adapter not included.  While it appears to be working at the moment, buyers should understand that this machine is sold AS-IS as a display piece and that its functionality is not guaranteed.  Even if everything works, it is a prototype and may have unknown differences from production units.  No returns accepted.
