    Description

Original Chinese Cultural Revolution Poster: Young Mao
Poster Title: Chairman Mao goes to Anyuan
This Cultural Revolution poster is of Mao as a young man on his way to the city of Anyuan to lead a miners' strike. Possibly the most important painting during Cultural Revolution, this image portrays Mao igniting the revolutionary flame. The poster was taken from an original painting by Liu Chunhua, a Red Guard studying at the Central Academy of Industrial Arts, but was collectively designed and planned by a group of students from universities and institutes in Peking. It became the benchmark for the iconographical representation of Mao and was reproduced an estimated 900 million times and could be seen almost everywhere, in houses, factories and offices.
It is an original Cultural Revolution poster and for its age is in great condition. There are no tears or pinholes; there is some yellowing from age. The size of the poster is 30.25” x 21.25”.
A letter, similar to the one attached but customized for this poster and buyer, will be included with the purchase.
There are very cheap copies of the original posters being sold from China. If you just want a copy for the dorm room wall they are fine but if you want an original poster from the Cultural Revolution that increases in value over time this poster is it.
I started traveling to China in 1982 and after many trips found a shop in Beijing (business card attached), which sold original Mao memorabilia from which I purchased this and many other posters. I sold many of them but came across a bunch that I had packed away in storage and am now selling.
